– An activist art project fostering connections and dialogue about the greatest crisis of our time.
Office of Emergency – A Platform for Calm Conversations on the Impossible. Step inside and engage in discussions about the global crisis; share your knowledge and gain fresh perspectives. Let’s explore realities, possibilities, and opportunities together.
This is the message displayed on the window of a modest basement shop on Vesterbrogade, in the heart of Copenhagen. This space has been home to the Office of Emergency since February 2020. A temporary hub designed for curious and concerned citizens; a place for those who, like us, are compelled to respond to the state of emergency outlined in the latest UN IPCC report.
We are facing a climate catastrophe and the sixth mass extinction. At a time when scientific forecasts paint alarming scenarios and new initiatives are burgeoning, we face profound transformations in our way of life and collective awareness.
How can we prevent apathy in such troubling times? How do we inspire action in the face of potential dystopia?
The idea of an OoE emerged as an artistic antidote to an apathetic tendency in contemporary society where the distance between the realization of the circumstances and the consequences of standing up for one's beliefs are at odds. Let’s start a calm conversation about the impossible!
This project has been conceived as a relational, activist platform that serves both the general public and the art community. We believe that connection, dialogue, and mutual recognition are some of the most powerful tools for combating frustration and apathy. To this end, we have developed a contemplative, dialogue-based art initiative aimed at contributing to the growing wave of awareness and action.
Drawing inspiration from theories of fellowship, sensory experience, and kinship, the project emphasizes three key elements: fostering interpersonal encounters; creating a space for conversation rooted in reality and scientific understanding; and establishing a platform for research, dialogue, and the development of regenerative, forward-thinking models for the art world—both locally and internationally.
OoE is created by visual artist Signe Vad and the Syndicate of Creatures
